Reading Notes: The Green Jewel

Image
(ocean,  Pixabay ) A prince was bored and so he went to his father to complain. The King to appease his son set up a boat outing with 20 virgins. These women and the prince set off on their adventure with the women rowing him around. He was having a great time until one of the women knocked her hair with the oar. She stopped rowing immediately and so the prince went to the woman to figure out what happened. It turns out that the woman had a green jewel into her hair and when the oar hit her hair, the jewel fell into the ocean. The prince said he would get her a new one but she said that she wanted her own jewel. Wanting to continue to party, the prince went to his scribe who was a magician to get help with the problem. The scribe went over and parted the sea and went down and retrieved the jewel. The woman was happy to have it back and started rowing again. The prince was happy and got to continue to party. The Man Who Went to Wake his Luck There were two brothers, one poor and one rich. One day the poor brother went out to see his brother's horses and saw a man grazing his brother's horses. The poor brother asked who he was and the man responded that he was his brother's luck. The poor brother asked where his luck was and the man told him where his luck slept in a cave. On the way to find his luck, the man ran into a gardener who wanted to ask luck why his garden was not doing well. Then the brother ran into a woman king who wanted to know why her subjects did not listen. Then a wolf asked why he did not have anything to live on. Then a thorn gatherer asked why this was his destiny. The poor brother promised to ask each question and went on his quest. When he came to his luck he woke him up and asked the questions. Luck responded that the gardener had to dig up the jars of gold coins from his garden and then fruit would grow, the woman king's subjects would not list

Nim Tanak, or Half-boy The story of Nim Tanak starts with his father. His father was the king and had 4 wives, yet no children. He employed a Holy Man to help get his wives pregnant and so the Holy Man gave the King 4 apples to give to his wives. He gave each wife an apple and all ate it but one. One wife ate half the apple but saved the rest for later, unfortunately a crow carried the other half off before she finished it. Soon, the wives gave birth to the king's children. Two had boys and one had a girl, but the wife who did not finish the apple gave birth to only a half-boy. The king loved his children except the half-boy. The other children were doted on like the princess and princes that they were, but the half-boy had to play with the servant children. As they grew the other children played together and such, and one day the two boys and girl were out hunting. While out a demon flew down and captured the princess. The king was distraught and sent out an army with one o

Week 4 story: The night before

Image
THIS STORY HAS BEEN ADDED TO MY  Portfolio I was quietly sitting in my bedroom with my mother when it happened. It was the night before my wedding and I was buzzing. I couldn’t believe I was going to finally marry the man of my dreams. So I was sitting with my mother in my room when the craziness happened. Men in dirty clothes burst into the room and began yelling. It all happened so fast that I did not even know what was going on. They continued to yell and then one grabbed my arm and began to pull me out of the room. I tried kicking him and even biting at one point to try and get away. My mother held onto my arm pulling my back until they threw her off of me. They drug me outside and pulled me through the woods. I tried to be brave but it was hard not to cry. I could see the dream of being married slipping through my fingers.  Soon, we came to their camp where they put me in the corner. One man tried to console me by saying that they would not hurt me, they ju

Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche A

I read the first half of cupid and psyche for this reading. It was so good and I recommend it to everyone. The story is a story within a story. It begins with a man named Lucius who has been turned into a donkey and is stuck with a band of robbers. He witnesses a kidnapped girl being brought to the camp. The kidnapped girl was preparing for her wedding when she was stolen and was overcome with grief. An old woman who travels with the robbers tells the main story in this story to comfort her. The story is about the youngest princess, named Psyche, in a family who is a beauty unlike any other. People across many nations begin to worship her for her beauty and this upsets the goddess Venus. To get her revenge, Venus sends her son Cupid to screw up Psyche's life. Meanwhile, no one was marrying Psyche so her father went to an oracle to tell her fortune. The oracle tells a dark tale about the girl's life and gives them directions to put her on a cliffside. They are grief-stricken b

Reading Notes: Aesop A (Winter)

Image
I read Aesop fables by Milo Winter. I really like how easy and simple the fables are, although, I think they might be hard to expand upon because of their conciseness. I also liked that all of them had their message at the end in one sentence. I did not always agree with the message, but it made reading them easy. These were some of my favorites: The Wolf and the Kid "Do not let anything turn you from your purpose." In this story, a foolish goat kid strays from the group because he believes he is grown. A wolf finds him and the kid tricks the kid into playing a song that alerts the goat herding dogs to come get him.  The Sheep and the Pig "It is easy to be brave when there is no danger." This fable focuses on a pig who a farmer catches in his sheep pasture. When the pig is caught he screams and the sheep think he is silly to make such a fuss because when the sheep are caught, they go quietly. The difference is that the sheep are caught for their wool, an

Topic Brainstorm

I am very indecisive and like a lot of random things so picking a project idea is always hard for me. Looking through the links though, I found several ideas that seemed very interesting. Moon,  Pexels Man in the Moon : I love moon/space based things because I believe that the moon has an affect on us. Also, I am a big fan of zodiac/horoscopes so reading about these things has always been interesting to me. I liked the Man on the Moon because I think it is a common tale that most of us know some version of, even if it is just a connection to DreamWorks movies. Cultural Depictions of the Dog : I am a big animal lover and having a dog of my own has made me an even bigger fan. I think it would be a cool project to focus on the evolution of how people viewed these great animals. Chain Letters : Having grown up with the internet, I have come across many chain letters/messages, but it was amazing to many how much history they have behind them. I assumed that chain mail started wit
