Reading Notes: Aesop A (Winter)
I read Aesop fables by Milo Winter. I really like how easy and simple the fables are, although, I think they might be hard to expand upon because of their conciseness. I also liked that all of them had their message at the end in one sentence. I did not always agree with the message, but it made reading them easy. These were some of my favorites:
The Wolf and the Kid
"Do not let anything turn you from your purpose."
In this story, a foolish goat kid strays from the group because he believes he is grown. A wolf finds him and the kid tricks the kid into playing a song that alerts the goat herding dogs to come get him.
The Sheep and the Pig
"It is easy to be brave when there is no danger."
This fable focuses on a pig who a farmer catches in his sheep pasture. When the pig is caught he screams and the sheep think he is silly to make such a fuss because when the sheep are caught, they go quietly. The difference is that the sheep are caught for their wool, and the pig was going to be butchered.
The Ass Carrying the Image
"Do not try to take the credit to yourself that is due to others."
This story is about a donkey who is used to take a Holy image to a temple. Everyone bowed and praised the image as it went by and the donkey thought they were praising him. The donkey stopped and made lots of noises because he thought he was so great, but was then beaten because they were not praising the donkey, they were praising the image.
