Wikipedia Trails: Native American Mythologies to Sol
I am native American and although we did a unit on Native American Stories, I wanted to read more in depth and see what I could find on a broader scale. I started with Native American Mythologies which redirected to:
Mythologies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas
On this page I found a bunch of information about indigenous peoples and their beliefs. It was mostly a long list because to try and fit beliefs of such a large and diverse group of people is impossible. I scrolled until I found my tribe (Muscogee Creek Nation) and clicked to see what all they had.
Creek Mythology
It is interesting to learn about Creek Mythology because I was raised outside the tribe and the exposure I did have was not about any stories passed down or mythology. My family members I know of were religious and created baptist churches. This is obviously an assimilation of colonial religion being forced on them, but besides a few tales about my great grandmother's superstitions, I was pretty cut off from any mythology.
Solar Deity
I clicked over to Solar Deity from Creek Mythology since the Supreme God of Creek Nation was one. I like stories of solar deities because they seem the most likely to me. I think if I lived long ago, believing that the glowing orb in the sky was our God seems most plausible.
Sol
There is a lot of information about Solar Deities so after skimming a few sections I went back up and clicked on Sol. Mostly because I took 6 years of Spanish and know that means sun and was wondering how Sol could be different than the Solar Deity page and found myself back to a Norse mythology. Sol obviously meaning sun and being the Sun personified in the Prose Edda. It is amazing to me how far reaching the Prose Edda is and how Norse Mythology is as well.
