Introduction to an Almost Graduate

Hello! My name is Kennedie Milligan and I am a (super)senior at the University of Oklahoma. I am a Communication major, a Women and Gender Studies minor, and am also pre-nursing. These three things may seem like a random grouping, but I have a lot of interests and am slightly indecisive, so this is what I have come up with.

I went to high school in Broken Arrow and that is where my parents still live today. I have 3 brothers, and from my older brother I have 3 nieces. My entire family is pretty much in Oklahoma and has been my entire life. There is not a lot I am sure of in life, but I am sure that I need out of this state.

I am graduating in December and then I am going to nursing school. I want to go to a accelerated program for my BSN out of state, because I am afraid if I don’t leave now then I will never get out. I just decided to do nursing last August (hence the extra semester of undergrad to get my prereqs in) and so I am a little late to that game. I have always known that I wanted to help people, and thought that I would do that through nonprofit work, but when my friend went into nursing I realized there was a more practical way of helping people that didn’t involve making no money and starving to death.

I don’t have a lot of hobbies, although I do like to try new things. I really love concerts at small venues, I currently have tickets to about 7 more concerts for the fall. Also, I love hanging out with my dog. She is a goldendoodle who I adopted last August. She is 20 months old and a terror. Her name is Arlo James (and her instagram is @arloisweird). She is definitely queen of my apartment and I do not know what I would do without her. I also have a hamster named Hercules who keeps us company, as well.  We are a random bunch for sure, but we keep each other sane, or maybe they just keep me sane and I annoy them all the time. All the same, I am enjoying my last semester at OU and excited for to graduate.

  1. Hi Kenedie! I completely agree with you about getting out of state for the school I go to next! I was born in the panhandle of Texas, but have lived in Oklahoma since I was four so I’m just excited to move somewhere totally different, like the mountains or the beach. That picture of your dog is amazing! It looks like it belongs in a goldendoodle magazine! Also, I love the name Arlo!

  2. Hi Kennedie!

I am obsessed with your dog. I have wanted a golden doodle for a while. I think they are so sweet and fun to play with, they may be my favorite dog next to dachshunds. I think it is pretty cool you have so many different interests. I have always wanted to pursue a criminology/public relations double major but my family has discouraged that pretty hard so I won't be able to do that like I really want to :(. I think it is awesome you are following your dreams. Get out of OK while you can, there are so many fun places to see in the world.

  3. Hi Kennedie! Congrats on nearing the end of your OU journey. Nursing school is challenging but very worthwhile. I think half or more of my family are nurses or in the medical field somehow. The only way I could be in the medical field would be in the accounting offices. I'm just not cut out for anything medical. I live in Bixby, so we are practically neighbors! Your dog is absolutely gorgeous & I love the name Arlo!

  4. Hi Kennedie!

I am also a "super" senior and graduating this December also. Even though I have been in school much longer I image because I am also indecisive. I also have just about all of my family here in Oklahoma, but I know that this is home. But I do understand the want to get out and experience some place new. And lets talk more about Arlo your Goldendoodle can we? I have wanted a Goldendoodle for a good couple years now. I may end up following her on insta now lol. I wish you all the success in your nursing school adventure, I can not do blood or poking other people with needles. But I do understand your desire to help people

  5. Hey Kennedie! I grew up in Texas and Oklahoma is my first experience living outside of Texas, and I totally agree with you about wanting to leave. There a many great things about both Oklahoma and Texas, but neither are great enough to make me want to stay in either. I think it's really cool you want to do nursing, and I hope you achieve your dreams with it. Your dog is super cute, too!

  6. Hi Kennedie! Arlo is so adorable! I have wanted to get a dog (or two) to keep me company since I have moved to Norman! My fur babies are back home with my parents. Your minor in Women and Gender studies is awesome! I recently took an online course titled "Sweet Boys and Rough Girls" and I loved it. I wish you the best in Nursing school and I am sure wherever you choose to live, Hercules and Arlo will continue to keep you sane!

  7. It is always nice to meet up with someone again, Kennedie, and that combination of majors makes perfect sense to me; in addition to all the science, the Comm and WGS majors will give you so much insight into your patients and their families. Nursing is such a great career because there are so many things you can do, and of course so many places that you can go (you and Arlo!). And the idea of a hamster named Hercules cracks me up: maybe you could retell the legends of the Greek hero Hercules but with hamsters and other little creatures instead. Do you watch Tiny Hamster on YouTube? Here is one of my favorites: Tiny Hamster is a Giant Monster ... if a hamster can be Godzilla, I am sure he could be a Greek hero too!

  8. Hi Kennedie! Your pup is beyond cute!! Much like yourself, I am gearing up to be a (half) super senior too graduating next December! I am relieved to have little more time to sort out my future, however I do wish to be out of Norman much sooner (no pun intended). In addition to your commitment to having a Communications major, it is quite impressive that you are going straight into nursing school. Congrats on almost finishing and all that is to come!

  9. Hey Kennedie, I'm a super senior graduating in December too! I love concerts too! What shows are you planning on going to? I also really love your photo of your dog. I will definitely have to check out her instagram. I really want to get a dog but I work 40+ hours a week plus going to school so I don't think it would be fair to the dog because I wouldn't be able to give them the attention they deserve. It's really impressive that you are wanting to go to a nursing program outside of school. I really wanted to leave the state for college, but I ended up at OU instead. I don't regret it though. Good luck on your last semester and at nursing school :)

  10. Hi Kennedie,
I also grew up near Tulsa and pretty much all of my family lives in Oklahoma too, but I understand wanting to get out of Oklahoma somehow. Hopefully nursing will allow you to live somewhere that you like more. On a lighter note, Arlo is super cute and looks like a very good girl. Good luck with your final semester!

  11. Hey Kennedie,
I think Nursing is a great path to follow, especially after reading your interest in wanting to help people while being able to make a living too. I think your communications studies will surely assist you in the various roles you have to play working as a nurse. I've lived in Oklahoma my whole life as well and have really fallen in love with the idea of living in Colorado! I feel like there is stuff to do during every season of the year and I really enjoy the kind of community I experience when I visit. Maybe you could look into some nursing program up that way if you're interested in anything outdoors!

  12. Hi Kennedie!
I am from Tulsa so we're practically from the same area! My family got a goldendoodle last December and she is definitely a handful.
I think it is great that you chose to stick with all your different areas of degrees even though you decided on nursing. It is great to learn about those things that are interesting to us.
I hope nursing goes well and good luck on the rest of this semester!

  13. Hi Kennedie! your choice of majors and minors are super random but interesting all at the same time, im glad you were able to combine all of your likes into one common goal. Nursing I think is an amazing way to help people so i have no doubts that you'll love it. Your dog is absolutely precious, im starting to have the itch for a pet so im sure I will be getting one soon, or at least i hope! I do not blame you for wanting to get out of Oklahoma, hopefully im not too far behind you because its time for me to leave as well.

  14. Hi Kennedie! You said you don't have much hobbies, but i can tell your hobbies are so special and interest. How lovely the named Hercules hamster is! And how pretty Arlo James is. Both are all i need to spend my spare time if i was you, since you are so busy with school works (a major and two minors. It's a lot). Congrat for your upcoming graduation and your nursing job.

  15. Hi Kennedie, your dog, Arlo, is completely adorable. I have been wanting a golden doodle for the longest time and just seeing other people with golden doodles makes me so happy. I totally understand your struggle with being indecisive and therefore your variety of majors and minors, I am double majoring and then minoring as well so I always get questions of what my plans are with that. Congrats on graduating this December, though, and I hope you have a wonderful semester!

  16. Hi Kennedie, it is nice to “meet” you. I have four young nephews; they are so fun! As a pre-med I understand the call to the healthcare field. I am glad you found your passion. It can be a long and daunting path, but in the end it is worth it. I wish you the best of luck as you begin nursing school!

  17. Hi Kennedie! My name is Makenzi and I am also a senior here. I was pre-nursing for about 2 years until I decided to switch my major to Public Realtions, so that is cool how you are kind of getting to do that as well as communications! I know nursing school can be extremely tough, but you will be great and I wish you the best of luck!

  18. Hey Kennedie,

It sounds like you have a ton on your plate with your major, minor, and pre-nursing designation. I don't think I could handle all of that. Then again, I am a math major and people say the same thing to me all the time, so I suppose it's sort of a "pick your poison" kind of deal. Though since we're all getting degrees that may seem a little morbid. Anyway, good luck this semester!

  19. Hi Kennedie! Fun fact: I am actually watching Hercules as I am writing this comment (sadly there is no hamster in this movie)! What type of music do you listen too? It would be interesting to hear about some of the concerts that you have been going to this semester. I am a huge fan of small venue concerts for all kinds of music, mostly rock, metal and indie, but I will listen to anything from classical music to rap to metal.
    Regards, Anna Margret

  20. Hi Kennedie! Arlo is so adorable! My friend has a goldendoodle and says that she is a terror as well, so that is funny. Your interests may be scattered, but I am kind of jealous to see that you got to take a whole array of classes. I have always been a psychology, pre-PA major, and wish that I could also take classes out of my element in order to learn more.

  21. Hey Kennedie! The picture of Arlo immediately caught my eye. Make sure you tell her that she’s very cute and a good girl. I also love concerts at small venues, and I’m from the Tulsa area too, so maybe we’ve been at the same concerts?? I’m seeing one of my favorite bands next week and I’m so excited, I can’t believe you have seven lined up! Good luck in nursing school, you’ve got this!

  22. Hey Kennedie!! Your dog is ADORABLE!!! Also both of your pet names are perfect and I have to see a picture of Hercules!! It made me really happy to see that you are from Broken Arrow, always a good moment when you see someone else representing the #918. But all things said and done, I want you to know that I respect the hell out of nurses and anyone that can do so much to help other human beings. I have no doubts that you will be brilliant.

  23. Hey Kennedie!
So this past week you read my storybook and you was excited to keep reading (The Party) well.. I went ahead and posted the party since I had a chance this week to read Alice in Wonderland for this weeks reading and storytelling. The Kings court is still visible right now because I found another picture I wanted to use. But I need help with a name for him

  24. Hey Kennedie, I can definitely understand your need to explore out of your home state. I lived in Kansas for nearly all of my life and by the time I had finished high school I knew that I wanted to go to college somewhere else. While I didn’t go too far, getting the chance to start over somewhere completely new was incredible and I would highly recommend it. Best of luck to you in your future!

  25. Hello Kennedie,

Congrats on almost graduating! I know your life is getting very busy around this time but keep up the good work. Also, can I have one day with your dog? Your dog is so adorable. I wish I could have one right now. My life is way too busy right now for one. Good luck with pursuing Nursing school! stay focused.

  26. Hi Kennedie,
I loved the story I just read. I liked how you split into three parts like almost splitting it into acts of a play. I also love how there is closure with the man who kept stealing the stuff the boy earned getting caught and the boy marring his love. I wish he could have proven to his father he was not lying thought.

  27. Hi Kennedie! Thanks for the quick view into your life! I enjoyed reading about your varied interests and how you solved that problem, as I had a bit of a tough time deciding as well. I also had a similar feeling about my hometown in Washington, which is why I ended up here. It can be so good to leave for a while. It clears the head and helps you to see what you appreciate about a place. I hope finals treat you well!

  28. Hi Kennedie! I'm glad you decided to go with nursing! Two of my best friends have gone through through nursing school and I know how hard it is all thanks to them, so good luck to you! But you'll make it through with hard work and dedication. I feel your need to get out of this state. I have been applying to grad schools out of state just because I'm so ready to get out of Oklahoma. Anyway, good luck on finals!

  29. Hey Kennedie,
It is really cool with all the things you are studying. I can see how that would keep you really busy. I'm in athletics and I do not know if there is anyway that I would be able to handle your schedule. Good luck with everything moving forward, you are going to do great.

  30. Hi Kennedie! It's super awesome that you have so many interests. I think having a broad range of things you know about is always helpful when writing stories like the ones we do for these classes! I love goldendoodles so your dog is the cutest thing ever! Good luck with graduation!

    1. Hey there Kennedie! Thanks for sharing a little bit of who you are with everyone! I absolutely love the picture of your dog Arlo! I really love goldendoodles and how they have a personality that is nearly as big as they are! Good luck with all of your future goals, in nursing and otherwise! (Also sorry for the reply on the deleted comment, I suck at technology haha!)
